1,016 persons test positive for COVID-19 over the weekend

  • 436 COVID-19 patients detected on Sunday
  • Total case count rises to 591,667
  • Includes 274,780 detections from Western Province
  • 9,471 persons under medical or home-based care

COVID-19 detections during the weekend rose to 1,016 with 436 persons testing positive for COVID-19 yesterday.

The patients detected yesterday include 430 persons from the New Year cluster and six overseas arrivals.

On Saturday, 574 persons from the New Year cluster and six Sri Lankan overseas arrivals tested positive for the virus. The Health Promotion Bureau states that 7,221 PCR tests and 4,305 rapid antigen tests were conducted on Saturday.

The country’s total COVID-19 case count currently stands at 591,667. This includes 487,000 persons from the New Year cluster, 82,785 persons from the Peliyagoda cluster, 9,068 persons from the Prisons cluster and 3,059 persons from the Divulapitiya cluster.

In addition to this, 7,077 Sri Lankan overseas arrivals and 328 foreigners are also included in the country’s total COVID-19 case count.

The Epidemiology Unit states that 118,408 persons from Colombo, 102,318 persons from Gampaha, 54,054 persons from Kalutara, 38,623 persons from Galle, and 28,789 persons from Kurunegala have tested positive for COVID-19.

During the third wave of the pandemic, 86,111 patients from Colombo, 83,784 patients from Gampaha, and 46,996 patients from Kalutara were detected.

At present, 9,471 persons are under medical or home-based care and 1,800 persons suspected of having COVID-19 are under observation.

The Epidemiology Unit states that 141 persons were released from care yesterday, raising the country’s COVID-19 recoveries 

to 567,077.
