The Government yesterday announced travel restrictions will be extended until 21 June, a day after conflicting reports were circulated about the relaxation of restrictions on 14 June, causing confusion among the public.

According to the National Operations Centre for the Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) Head Gen. Shavendra Silva, restrictions have been extended until 4 a.m. on 21 June.

“During this period, essential services can function as they do now and mobile vendors providing the public with food and essential items will continue to operate,” Gen. Silva said. He added that construction, apparel and other industries, agriculture, and organic fertiliser production will be permitted to operate as well.

Weekly markets in areas outside the Western Province can also be held without the gathering of large crowds. Economic centres will be permitted to operate on two days and the Government will announce the dates soon, the NOCPCO Head said.
