2,789 persons test positive for COVID-19

  • 18,691 PCR tests carried out yesterday

The detection of 2,789 COVID-19 positive persons yesterday brought the country’s COVID-19 patient count to 218,923.

The Health Promotion Bureau states that 18,691 PCR tests were carried out yesterday and the patients detected include 2,759 persons from the New Year cluster.

According to the Epidemiology Unit, 116,880 patients from the New Year cluster, 82,785 patients from the Peliyagoda cluster, 6,608 patients from the Prisons cluster, and 3,059 patients from the Divulapitiya cluster have been detected.

The cumulative patient count of the four clusters is 212,091.

The country’s COVID-19 detections also include 4,562 Sri Lankan returnees from abroad and 326 foreigners.

This includes the 2,637 patients from the New Year cluster, 78 patients from the Prisons cluster, 21 Sri Lankan returnees from abroad, and two foreigners who tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday.

Of the patients, 575 were from Gampaha, 339 were from Colombo, 198 were from Nuwara Eliya, 167 were from Jaffna, and 127 were from Kandy.

The district distribution of COVID-19 patients detected to date shows 54,065 persons from Colombo, 36,992 persons from Gampaha, 23,474 persons from Kalutara, 11,498 persons from Kandy, and 11,090 persons from Kurunegala.

At present, 32,848 COVID-19 patients are under medical care and 1,314 persons suspected of having COVID-19 are under observation.

According to the Epidemiology Unit, 1,852 persons were discharged yesterday, bringing the country’s COVID-19 recoveries to 184,090.
