628 persons test positive for COVID-19

COVID-19 detections rose to 544,013 with 628 persons testing positive for COVID-19 yesterday.

The COVID-19 patients detected yesterday include 627 persons from the New Year cluster and one overseas arrivals.

The previous day, 592 persons from the New Year cluster tested positive for COVID-19 and the Health Promotion Bureau states that 6,088 PCR tests and 4,453 rapid antigen tests were carried out on Thursday.

According to the Epidemiology Unit, 439,288 patients have been linked to the New Year cluster. The Peliyagoda cluster has a patient count of 82,785, the Prisons cluster has a patient count of 9,052, and the Divulapitiya cluster has a patient count of 3,059.

The country’s imported COVID-19 cases include 6,959 Sri Lankans and 328 foreigners.

The Epidemiology Unit states that 113,364 persons from Colombo, 95,969 persons from Gampaha, 52,144 persons from Kalutara, 33,655 persons from Galle, and 26,293 persons from Kurunegala have tested positive for COVID-19.

COVID-19 detections during the third wave of the pandemic include 81,067 persons from Colombo, 77,435 persons from Gampaha, and 45,086 persons from Kalutara.

At present, 15,619 persons are under medical or home-based care and 1,808 persons suspected of having COVID-19 are under observation.

The Epidemiology Unit states that 339 persons were released from care yesterday, raising the country’s COVID-19 recoveries to 514,573.

Meanwhile, health officials yesterday urged the public to adhere to safety guidelines as an increase in COVID-19 detections has been observed.

“In the last two to three days, we saw a slight increase, including COVID-19 detections among school children,” Family Health Bureau Director Dr. Chithramalee De Silva said.
