President Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday called on the  Parliament to form a Select Committee to investigate monetary and fiscal policy failures that led to sovereign default on foreign debt and economy to bankruptcy.

“If the House agrees I can appoint a Presidential Commission of Inquiry,” he told the House joining the debate on 2023 Budget.

“Otherwise have a Select Committee. The Parliament has powers to do that. You all decide on that,” he said, responding to Opposition Legislator Kabir Hashim who said people are undergoing severe hardship whilst the key actors who were responsible for tax cuts and money printing after 2020 which led to the default are free and not held accountable.
