Jayantha Katagoda

Jayantha Katagoda will return to Parliament to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Ajith Nivard Cabraal yesterday.

In July, Katagoda resigned from his Parliament seat to make room for the entry of Basil Rajapaksa, who was appointed as the Finance Minister.

Katagoda, a film artist, was appointed to Parliament from the National List of the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna.

Speculation was rife that Katagoda will be assigned a State Minister portfolio.

Katagoda was first elected to Parliament in 2000 representing the Colombo District. After dissolving the Parliament, he was later elected to Parliament in 2001 as well as in 2011. Until his resignation, he acted as the Deputy National Organiser of the SLPP and also served as a member of the Committee on Public Petitions and Ministerial Consultative Committee on Highways of the ninth Parliament.
