The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the establishment of an inter-ministerial tourism committee aimed at enhancing coordination and maximising the potential of the thriving tourism sector.

Chaired by Secretary to the President SamanEkanayake, the committee will include representatives from relevant government agencies, fostering cohesive decision-making processes to drive tourism growth effectively.

Given the diverse nature of the tourism industry and its various assets, responsibilities and regulations are dispersed among multiple government agencies. Therefore, ensuring efficient coordination and cooperation among these entities is crucial to fully harness the sector’s potential and achieve desired outcomes.

Recognising tourism as a key contributor to foreign exchange earnings, the 2024 Budget outlined several initiatives to boost the sector. These include the implementation of a comprehensive long-term program aimed at attracting a minimum of five million tourists annually.

The proposal, submitted by Tourism Minister Harin Fernando, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on Monday.
