The country’s COVID-19 death toll yesterday rose to 586, with health authorities confirming five COVID-19 deaths that occurred on Sunday and Monday.
According to a statement issued by the Department of Government Information, an 80-year-old individual from Battaramulla tested positive for COVID-19 while receiving treatment at the Moratuwa Base Hospital and was transferred to the Colombo East Base Hospital. The individual died yesterday of trauma of blood poisoning and pneumonia due to a bacterial infection, COVID-19 and acute kidney damage.
A 67-year-old individual from Colombo 10 was receiving treatment at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka when he tested positive for COVID-19 and was transferred to the Colombo East Base Hospital. On Sunday, he died of COVID pneumonia, exacerbated chronic lung disease and high blood pressure.
Another individual from Colombo 10 also died on Sunday. He too, tested positive for COVID-19 while receiving treatment at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka. He was then transferred to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, where he died of COVID pneumonia and cancer that spread to the lungs. The individual was 71 years old.
A 77-year-old individual from Battaramulla died at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases on Sunday. The cause of death is cited as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and respiratory illness.
The Department of Government Information states that a 71-year-old individual from Jaffna died on Sunday while receiving treatment at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. He died of anaemia with upper gastrointestinal bleeding and pneumonia associated with COVID-19.
