A decline was seen in Sri Lanka’s COVID-19 vaccination drive with only 18,790 persons receiving a COVID-19 vaccine dose on Tuesday.
Sri Lanka has thus far administered the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine to 14,788,141 persons and the second dose to 12,839,638 persons. According to Our World in Data, 68.78% of the country’s total population has received the first dose, as of 19 October, and 59.63% has received the second dose as well.
At present, students who are sitting for the Advanced Level examination this year as well as students who sat for the examination last year are being vaccinated. According to health officials, 80% of this group has received a vaccine dose thus far.
“The school vaccination program started on 15 October from two schools in Colombo CMC area: Visakha Vidyalaya and Thurstan College. The vaccination is offered to school-based students sitting for the A/L examination this year and those who sat for the A/L examination last year,” Health Promotion Bureau Director Dr. Ranjith Batuwanthudawe said.
He added that starting this Saturday, eligible persons could receive the vaccine at their respective MOH offices as well.
On Tuesday, 908 persons received the first dose of Sinopharm and 14,124 persons received the second dose of the vaccine. In total, 11,852,577 persons have received the first dose of Sinopharm and 10,122,569 persons have received the second dose.
The second dose of AstraZeneca was administered to 2,352 persons on Tuesday, raising the total number of persons to receive the second dose of the vaccine to 1,369,325. The first dose of AstraZeneca was administered to 1,479,575 persons.
The first dose of Moderna has been administered to 803,098 persons and the second dose has been administered to 762,867 persons. On Tuesday, 44 persons received the second dose of Moderna.
The Epidemiology Unit states that 873 persons received the first dose of Pfizer on Tuesday, and 489 persons received the second dose of the vaccine. In total, the first dose of Pfizer has been administered to 493,795 persons and the second dose of the vaccine has been administered to 429,285 persons.
In addition to this, the first dose of Sputnik V has been administered to 159,096 persons and the second dose has been administered to 155,592 persons.
