Co-Spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardena yesterday revealed that there was no discussion during the meeting of Cabinet of Ministers on Monday to delay the mini polls, but reiterated that it was extremely challenging for the Treasury to allocate funds to hold elections amidst the crisis.
“The Cabinet of Ministers did not discuss delaying the Local Government polls. But the Treasury has informed the Election Commission and the Supreme Court that the Government is grappled with a very challenging financial situation,” he added.
Emphasising that an election would require extra payments for manpower, transport, fuel and so on; Gunawardena said the Government coffers do not hold a position to cater to all these.
