2,456 persons test positive for COVID-19

The detection of 2,456 COVID-19 positive persons yesterday brought the country’s total COVID-19 patient count to 145,202.

According to the Department of Government Information, 2,433 patients detected yesterday were linked to the New Year cluster. The Divulapitiya, Peliyagoda, Prisons and New Year clusters have expanded to 138,896.

The Epidemiology Unit states that 82,785 persons from the Peliyagoda cluster, 45,426 persons from the New Year Cluster, 5,193 persons from the Prisons cluster, and 3,059 persons from the Divulapitiya cluster are included in the country’s local COVID-19 cases.

The imported cases include 4,054 Sri Lankan returnees from abroad and 315 foreigners.

This includes the 2,275 COVID-19 patients detected on Sunday, of which 2,161 were from the New Year cluster, 63 were Sri Lankan returnees from abroad, and 51 were from the Prisons cluster.

The Health Promotion Bureau states that 26,941 PCR tests were performed on Sunday and 438 persons from Colombo, 410 persons from Gampaha, 261 persons from Galle, 241 persons from Kalutara, and 179 persons from Nuwara Eliya tested positive for COVID-19.

According to the Epidemiology Unit, 41,206 persons from Colombo, 26,353 persons from Gampaha, 12,129 persons from Kalutara, 6,901 persons from Kurunegala, and 6,014 persons from Kandy have tested positive for COVID-19 to date.

The country has thus far established 125 COVID-19 treatment centres with a bed capacity of 21,402. A total of 73 ICU beds were occupied as of Sunday.

At present, 24,611 persons are under medical care. This includes 626 persons at the Punani Treatment Centre, 493 persons at the Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital, and 489 persons at the Bingiriya Treatment Centre.

Hospitals also have 1,546 persons suspected of having COVID-19 under observation.

According to the Epidemiology Unit, 1,307 persons were discharged from hospitals yesterday having recovered from COVID-19. This includes 88 persons from the Bingiriya Treatment Centre, 85 persons from the Pasdunrata ITC, and 82 persons from the Punani Treatment Centre.

A total of 119,629 persons have recovered from COVID-19 to date.
