With the aim of improving school students analytical, problem solving and communication skills, the Business Faculty of SLIIT conducted ‘Soft Skills + 2013’ for the second consecutive year at the SLIIT campus in Malabe on 27 September 2013. Secondary school students and teachers from island-wide participated in the event. The event was carried out in two segments. The first segment was a fun filled group activity focusing on soft skills such as team work, creative thinking, time management, working under pressure and problem solving. The second segment was a quiz competition comprising five focus areas; general knowledge, news and current affairs, sports, history and arts and entertainment. While the program attracted over 200 students from grade 12 and 13, Musaeus College Colombo, secured first place in the quiz competition with St. Peter’s College Colombo and Methodist Girls College Colombo, coming in second and third respectively. Commenting on the event, SLIIT Faculty of Business Dean Dr. Theekshana Suraweera stated: “We have designed the soft skills program for students sitting for their GCE A/Level examinations. The goal of the program was to spark the interest of secondary school children and develop their soft skills by enhancing their knowledge on a wide range of disciplines, such as problem solving, team work and creativity which are outside the subject material in the school curriculum.” “To get an edge over competitors, we have found that students need to acquire soft skills to exhibit their true potential. This program is a part of SLIIT’s social responsibility to help students to understand the importance of developing soft skills along with academic skills to succeed in their place of work,” said SLIIT President/CEO Professor Lalith Gamage.
