The Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP) is designed with the aim of providing higher education facilities in Korea for international students and promoting international exchanges in the field of education, as well as promoting mutual friendship amongst the participating countries.

A Korean Government Scholarship (KGS) for a Sri Lankan student was first awarded in the year of 1978. As of February 2015, 32 Sri Lankan recipients of the KGS have graduated from universities in Korea and about 34 students are currently studying in Korea under the KGSP. The Government of the Republic of Korea has gradually increased the number of scholarships awarded to international students. Confirming the above, 15 students have been awarded with the KGS to study for their Bachelors, Masters or Doctoral Degrees in Korea in the year 2015.

On 19 August, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea Chang Won Sam awarded the selected Sri Lankan students with KGS for the fall semester of 2015 to study for Masters or Doctoral degrees in Korea and hosted a lunch for them to commemorate the awarding of the scholarships at his residence on the same day.
