BOC Travels, the fully owned travel and tour subsidiary of Bank of Ceylon has announced the appointment of R. M. P. Rathnayake as its new Chairman.
Rathnayake brings with him over 25 years of exemplary service in the public sector, most recently serving as Deputy Secretary to the Treasury. A graduate in Agricultural Economics from the University of Peradeniya, he holds a Master’s degree in Agriculture from the Agricultural University of Norway, equipping him with a solid academic foundation and a global perspective on development.
Throughout his career, Rathnayake has played a pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s economic and financial landscape. He has led high-level negotiations with bilateral and multilateral development partners, mobilising foreign funding for national infrastructure and development projects. His experience includes strategic engagement with lending agencies to support sustainable growth and long-term economic planning.
His leadership in financial oversight is equally noteworthy. Rathnayake previously served as an Ex Officio Director at the Bank of Ceylon, where he chaired the Integrated Risk Management Committee, ensuring strong governance and risk mitigation practices. He also served on the Boards of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka and the Colombo Lotus Tower Management Company Ltd., in various capacities.
Internationally, Rathnayake has made a notable contribution as a Director and Alternate Executive Director of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), where he played a critical role in approving institutional strategies, budgets, and policy frameworks while also strengthening oversight mechanisms.
He has held several senior leadership positions, including Chairman of the National Savings Bank, the National Credit Guarantee Institution, and the Local Loan and Development Fund. He has also served as a Director of People’s Bank, the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and as a Commission Member of the Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka. In addition, he has contributed to key national institutions such as the Civil Aviation Authority and the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management.
With extensive experience across banking, finance, development, regulation, and public governance, Rathnayake is well-positioned to steer BOC Travels into its next phase of growth.
