Sri Lankan Embassy in Berlin in collaboration with Hertha-Müller-Haus in Berlin and the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB), conducted a Sri Lanka tourism promotion event titled ‘Explore Sri Lanka’ on 15 July, in Berlin. The objective of this promotion was to enhance awareness of Sri Lanka as a tourism destination among senior citizens in Germany, including for long term stays.
The event was the first such Sri Lanka tourism promotion event in Germany focusing on the senior citizens and prioritised on wellness and healthy ageing. Germany is the fourth largest tourist source market for Sri Lanka with many repeat visitors. The event, which was attended by more than 100 participants including senior citizens and their family members, was held at Hertha-Müller-Haus, a meeting and leisure centre for senior citizens in the residential neighbourhood of Steglitz-Zehlendorf in Berlin.
Sri Lankan Ambassador to Germany Varuni Muthukumarana welcomed the participants and encouraged them to visit Sri Lanka for longer stays to discover the many fascinating aspects of the country at a leisurely and slower pace. She stated that while Sri Lanka has many attributes which make it an attractive destination for all age groups, interest in Sri Lanka among the senior citizen segment was growing due to increasing awareness of the benefits of Ayurveda treatments and high standards of hospitality.
Focusing on the senior citizen segment, Prasad Buwanekabahu of Sathya Ayurveda made a presentation on the practice and benefits of Ayurveda treatments in Sri Lanka followed by Dr. Irene Riedel of Suvarivi Ayurveda who briefed the participants of options for long term stays in Sri Lanka. The participants also enjoyed a cookery demonstration where they got a chance to engage in a cooking contest for the preparation and presentation of the Sri Lankan ‘Pol Sambol’. Several cultural performances were also held showcasing Kandyan, low country and Bharata Natayam dance traditions. The event concluded with serving of traditional Sri Lankan dishes and Ceylon tea.
