The Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), South Asia’s first purpose-built convention centre, is marking the 50th anniversary celebration of the 5th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit.

Held in Colombo from 16 to 19 August 1976, this landmark event represents the absolute pinnacle of Sri Lanka’s modern diplomatic history and international foreign policy.

Half a century ago, under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike, the BMICH welcomed heads of state, foreign ministers, and global delegates from over 85 nations. Iconic world figures—including Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Egyptian President Anwar al-Sadat—converged on Colombo, positioning the island nation at the very centre of global governance, sovereignty, and international cooperation.

A legacy of global leadership

The 1976 Summit solidified Sri Lanka’s leading role among developing countries, driving critical discourse on collective economic self-reliance and global equity. To honor this historic milestone, the BMICH will launch a series of commemorative retrospectives highlighting the venue’s evolution from a gifted monument of global friendship into South Asia’s premier regional event hub.

BMICH Director General Manuja Kariyapperuma said: “Hosting the 5th NAM Summit was a defining chapter that electrified the global stage and placed little Sri Lanka at the heart of international diplomacy. As we cross this 50-year milestone, we are celebrating more than just a conference; we are honoring a timeless legacy of dialogue, unity, and excellence that continues to guide our mission every single day.”

Preserving history for future generations

The Golden Jubilee commemoration will feature archival photo exhibitions, commemorative historical journals, and special insights into how the event shaped local culture—ranging from the original Central Bank commemorative currency and postal stamps to international press coverage from over 300 global journalists who arrived in Colombo in 1976.

Over the last five decades, the BMICH has continuously upgraded its world-class, multi-functional facilities across its sprawling 39 acres of prime land in Colombo. It remains a symbol of national pride, seamlessly blending its rich historical roots with ultra-modern convention, exhibition, and hospitality capabilities.
