For generations, travellers have been drawn to names such as Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui and Koh Phi Phi for the ultimate Thai beach escape. Yet Thailand’s relationship with the sea extends far beyond these well-known shores. Venture a little further and another Thailand emerges, with quieter islands, intimate communities, spectacular marine life and experiences that range from adventurous to wonderfully indulgent.

For Sri Lankan travellers dreaming of a Thai getaway, the Tourism Authority of Thailand has an enticing message: Thailand’s coast is yours to discover. From vibrant shores to tranquil islands, every destination offers a different side of island life waiting to be experienced, unwind and explore Thailand beyond the familiar.

Classics that earned their place

Phuket is popular among travellers from around the world; here’s a glimpse of what makes the island so special. The island combines long beaches and warm Andaman waters with an impressive range of experiences. Days can begin with snorkelling or diving, continue with a spa treatment and end aboard a sunset cruise. For those seeking greater privacy, private yacht excursions open up secluded coves and neighbouring islands, while sophisticated resorts provide a luxurious base from which to explore.

And for a change of scenery, Krabi offers a more dramatic side of Thailand’s coast. Towering limestone formations rise from the sea around Railay and Ao Nang, creating a spectacular setting for kayaking, island-hopping and boat trips. The scenery changes with every turn of the coast, making even a simple journey across the water feel like an adventure.

For a softer change of pace, Koh Samui offers a more leisurely take on island life. Palm-fringed beaches, elegant resorts and a well-established wellness culture make it particularly appealing to travellers looking for a more leisurely escape. Pattaya beyond the familiar

Look beyond Pattaya’s familiar side, and discover a destination that offers more than the energy and long-established reputation it is best known for.

The calmer stretches of Jomtien provide a more relaxed seaside experience, while nearby islands offer opportunities for swimming, sailing and water-based activities. Restaurants, cafés and resorts have also broadened the city’s appeal, making it possible to experience Pattaya in ways that extend well beyond its nightlife.

There is no single definition of a Thai beach escape. The choice does not have to be between the famous and the undiscovered. The most rewarding coastal journey can embrace both: the places that have earned their place on the map and the shores that make travellers feel as though they have found a little corner of Thailand for themselves.
