UNP mates reject Dayasiri’s double talk

By Ashwin Hemmathagama – Our Lobby Correspondent The allegations levelled against the UNP and its leader Ranil Wickremesinghe were rejected by fellow Parliamentarians Ajith Perera, Haren Fernando, Ranjan Ramanayake and Ruwan Wijewardene, identifying themselves as “the best friends of MP Dayasiri Jayasekara” at a press conference held last evening. According to them, Jayasekara was “plotting to leave the UNP for over a period of one year” but was waiting for the “best deal from the ruling party”, which never came his way. Confirming the internal issues within the UNP, they held that Dayasiri shouldn’t have “taken a hasty decision” but should have continued to fight against all problems “within the boundary of UNP” rather betraying the trust placed in him. “He has the right to leave the party, which we have no objection towards. But it was the UNP that nurtured him after he was chased off by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike years ago. He never had the patience visible with former President J.R. Jayawardene and President Mahinda Rajapaksa. He has committed political suicide. Even on Tuesday (23) at lunch, we were assured that he was not going to cross. Machang Dayasiri, why did you do this? This is all I want to ask him,” said MP Ajith Perera. MP Harin Fernando, who turned down the sexual harassment allegations levelled against UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, stated that he too could have been a victim if somebody approached MP Buddhika Pathirana, “a person not so hunky-dory.” “I have given character certificates on numerous occasions, going live on different television channels that Dayasiri will not leave the UNP. I have been proven wrong. I will immediately stop giving character certificates. Some websites highlighted that there has been a financial transaction behind his political change. If that is the case, he has proven the value of such money taken,” said Harin Fernando. Criticising the basis of the recent debates and the facts Dayasiri Jayasekara stood for, MP Ranjan Ramanayake said: “Now, he will have to confirm that there is no big rock at the Hambantota Port, no birds are smashed on the windshields of the aircrafts landing at Hambantota, that the Norochcholai thermal power plant did not break down 21 times, and most importantly, that the bearings of Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi are not worn out but are in good condition. “All those who left the UNP had some reason for the betrayal that ranges from money offered to a crime committed. Dayasiri is a far better actor than me. I have received so many awards whereas Dayasiri’s acting today is the best ever seen.”
