SEC marks Silver jubilee

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC) this week began celebrating its Silver jubilee with a series of multi-religious ceremonies.

Capital markets regular was established by the Securities Council Act No. 36 of 1987 for the “creation and maintenance of a market in which securities can be issued and traded in an orderly and fair manner and to protect the interest of investors”.

The SEC has lined up several activities on account of its 25th anniversary celebrations and they include launching of a coffee table book on the SEC, produce a corporate documentary in all three languages, an ‘Investment Day,’ a full-day exhibition comprising of presentations and educational stalls with the participation of all the stakeholders, a live 18-week one-hour television series and release two books on investing in the capital market in Sinhala and English. These activities will be carried out as part of SEC’s initiative to impart financial literacy throughout the country.

An awards presentation ceremony for students who have successfully completed Certificate in Capital Markets, Registered Investment Advisor, Diploma in Capital Markets and Certificate in Financial Journalism will be held in December 2012. It is expected that more than 600 students of the Capital Market Education and Training arm of the SEC will receive certificates at this annual event.
