Sri Lanka’s first nanotechnology research centre and nanoscience park will be declared open by President Mahinda Rajapaksa today (21 October) in Pitipana, Homagama. The Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology (SLINTEC) together with the Ministry of Technology and Research laid the foundation in June 2012 for the commencement of construction of the park, named the Nanotechnology Centre of Excellence (NCE). Sri Lanka’s first nanotechnology park is set up on a 50 acre land in Pitipana, Homagama, in Colombo District and established with Government and private sector participation. The nanotechnology park aims to create opportunities for all businesses to develop new products through a collaborative innovation process, taking them from research through development toward commercialisation. The foundation for this framework is the Nanotechnology Centre of Excellence (NCE), which marks the first phase of the development of the park. The Ministry of Technology and Research of Sri Lanka took the initiative to launch the nanoscience project together with industrial sector in early 2008. The Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology Ltd. was established in April 2008 as a private company under the Companies Act. It has been engaged in developing applications for nanotechnology through research and development since August 2009 with private sector partners.
