Says “I will not be where extremism is”
Wants to be identified as a Sri Lankan politician and not as a Muslim politician
Acknowledges respect for MR and Gota; admits joining Sirisena was one of the most difficult choices of his political career

Deputy Minister Faizer Mustapha yesterday pledged support to Opposition presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena at the presidential election next month. Mustapha pledged his support to Sirisena at an event the Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo. Speaking later at a press conference at the Opposition Leader’s office, Mustapha said that he had decided to support Sirisena on policy. He said that the decision to join Sirisena was one of the most difficult choices of his political career. Mustapha however noted that he had great respect for President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and that was why he took more time to decide to join the Opposition. He also insisted that his decision to join the Opposition was not purely based on the Aluthgama incident. He said believes Sirisena will address minority issues. “I will not be where extremism is,” Mustapha added when speaking about the Aluthgama incident. Mustapha also said that he does not like to be seen as a Muslim politician but a Sri Lankan politician. (Colombo Gazette)
