Sri Lanka reached a significant milestone yesterday by welcoming its two millionth visitor of the year, a symbolic achievement that strengthens the country’s outlook for reaching at least 2.3 million arrivals by year-end.

The accomplishment brings the industry closer to Sri Lanka Tourism’s revised annual target of 2.6 million visitors.

The landmark arrival underscores the resilience and renewed global appeal of Sri Lanka as a multifaceted destination, renowned for its cultural heritage, biodiversity, beaches, adventure experiences and wellness offerings.

Tourism authorities attributed the steady rise in arrivals not only to increased global interest but also to the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau’s (SLTPB) sustained promotional push at major international travel fairs, including WTM London, ITB Asia and IFTM Top Resa in Paris.

The two millionth visitors, a French couple Rafael and Clair, arrived in Colombo unaware of the surprise that awaited them. They were warmly received by Sri Lanka Tourism officials, greeted with traditional dancers and escorted to the Silk Route facility amid much fanfare. The couple cut a ceremonial cake to mark the occasion and expressed delight at the colourful cultural welcome, calling it an unforgettable start to their holiday.

The officials note that the achievement signals strong momentum heading into 2026, especially given the rapid surge in arrivals from 2021 to 2025. The year 2025 has been particularly successful for Sri Lanka Tourism, with the destination earning multiple international accolades and maintaining a steady rise in visitor numbers.

Sri Lanka Tourism is now preparing to launch a comprehensive public relations and digital marketing campaign to further elevate the country’s global profile. The Government’s free visa initiative is also expected to boost arrival numbers in the coming months. Authorities say these efforts will complement ongoing projects aimed at strengthening the sector’s long-term competitiveness and enhancing the visitor experience.

Sri Lanka’s journey back to prominence follows a difficult period marked by the 2019 Easter attacks, the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2022 economic crisis. With the latest milestone, officials say the industry has clearly regained its footing. The year 2018 is considered the best-ever year when arrivals reached 2.2 million.

By receiving the two millionth tourist arrival this year, Sri Lanka Tourism wishes to ensure that Sri Lanka’s hospitality is still at its best, and is worthy of getting an experience.
