President urges reforms to boost local dairy industry

President Anura Kumara Disanayake yesterday called for reforms to strengthen the local dairy industry through institutional efficiency and strategic transformation.

During a high-level discussion convened at the Presidential Secretariat with senior officials of the Agriculture Ministry along with key officials of the State-run entities—MILCO and the National Livestock Development Board (NLDB), the meeting focused on transforming these institutions into efficient and productive enterprises capable of meeting the country’s growing domestic dairy demand.

President Disanayake emphasised the importance of minimising production costs and maximising the use of existing resources to position the local dairy sector as a market-driven, efficient and sustainable industry.

Officials from MILCO noted that the company has recorded an increase in production capacity in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in the previous year.

Among those in attendance were Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation Minister K.D. Lalkantha, Senior Additional Secretary to the President Kapila Janaka Bandara, Agriculture Ministry Additional Secretary Dr. Palika Fernando, MILCO Chairman G.V.H. Gotabhaya, NLDB Chairman Dr. B.C.S. Perera and a group of senior officials from institutions under the Agriculture Ministry. .
