In a time when startups and businesses are navigating constant disruption, TiE Colombo is creating space for powerful conversations that matter. Through its recent Fireside Chat series, TiE Colombo brought together some of Sri Lanka’s most visionary leaders to share how resilience and sustainability are no longer just buzzwords — they are strategic imperatives.

One session focused on retail resilience, featuring industry stalwarts SL Retailers’ Association Founder President and Hameedia Group Director Hussain Sadique and Velona Group of Companies CEO and Chairman Dr. Gehan De Soysa. They shared how the retail sector was tested by crisis after crisis — and how reinvention was the only way forward.

“You have to play your own game, because the market is constantly shifting. Staying true to your path while adapting with purpose is what builds real success,” said Dr. Gehan De Soysa reflecting on bold leadership in uncertain times.

“We don’t change our strategy because of competition; we evolve it based on our internal strengths,” Hussain Sadique said, emphasising the importance of self-awareness and authenticity in building a sustainable brand.

This honest and reflective discussion revealed how even legacy businesses had to reimagine their models, adopt digital solutions, and make decisions that balanced short-term survival with long-term value.

In another compelling session, “Fuelling Sustainable Startups,” the spotlight turned to building purpose-driven ventures that prioritise both profit and impact. Alliance Finance Company PLC Deputy Chairman and Managing Director Romani De Silva and Vidullanka PLC Founder and CEO Riyaz Sangani shared their experiences integrating sustainability into core business strategy.

“If the person is genuinely doing the CSR and adds some impact on people’s lives and the planet, I’m sure that is a sustainable thing — and it will benefit the company,” Riyaz Sangani said, emphasising that authentic action, not just intention, drives real sustainability and long-term value.

“If sustainability is at your core, you’ll outperform others. Driving positive environmental impact wins the support of customers, regulators, and communities — and today, that momentum is stronger than ever.” Romani De Silva highlighted how sustainability isn’t just good ethics — it’s smart business.

The conversation shed light on how modern entrepreneurs can drive change through financial discipline, ethical leadership, and a deeper understanding of their social responsibility. Moderated by Mayukhe Peiris, the session challenged founders to look beyond traditional growth metrics and focus on the greater good.

What tied both sessions together was the energy in the room — a diverse community of students, startup founders, and corporate professionals, all eager to learn, connect, and contribute to a more resilient Sri Lankan economy.

By fostering these real, grounded conversations, TiE Colombo continues to establish itself as a catalyst for entrepreneurial transformation. These Fireside Chats weren’t just events — they were a reminder that with the right mindset and mentorship, entrepreneurs can lead with both courage and conscience.
