In alignment with Marriott International’s  Serve360 platform and inspired by the Marriott India Business Council’s ambitious goal of planting 100,000 trees, Sheraton Kosgoda Turtle Beach Resort has marked World Environment Day 2025 by planting 50 native mangrove plants along the scenic banks of the Madu River, one of southern Sri Lanka’s most vital wetland ecosystems.

This meaningful sustainability initiative brought together passionate volunteers, including TakeCare Champions, LST members, and associates from various departments, all united by a shared commitment to environmental responsibility and community impact.

To ensure ecological integrity and support local biodiversity, the mangrove saplings were sourced through the Wildlife and Ocean Resource Conservation Department in Matara. Emphasising community involvement, the planting cones used were handcrafted from bamboo by the Maduwa village community, reinforcing the resort’s pledge to promote sustainable practices while empowering traditional livelihoods.

Mangrove forests play a critical role in coastal resilience, carbon sequestration, and marine habitat preservation. Through this initiative, Sheraton Kosgoda Turtle Beach Resort reinforces its dedication to long-term environmental stewardship, echoing the Marriott spirit to “Do Good in Every Direction.”

As part of a global hospitality brand with deep roots in local communities, Sheraton Kosgoda remains steadfast in its support of reforestation, coastal rehabilitation, and responsible tourism for a greener tomorrow.
