Lassana Werala project extends up to Port City beach

'Lassana Werala', the beach cleaning project managed and led by the Wana Arana Foundation and sponsored by the Port City will be continued for a further one year in 2022, officials said.

This project that has been commended by the civil society, corporate sector, and a number of other stakeholders was largely credited for helping keep the Mt. Lavinia beach clean, safe, and hygienic for the discerning tourist.

This project is also supported by the Coast Conservation Department, the Dehiwala-Mt. Lavinia Municipal Council, and the Environment Police. 

Recently, at a ceremony to mark the second anniversary of the project, The Wana Arana Foundation Secretary Thushara Wanasinghe added a number of new initiatives. 

Placing wooden litter bins, wooden seats for tourists, and solar lighting are some of those new initiatives to enhance the deliverables of the Lassana Werala project. 

Whilst recognising the contribution made by a number of volunteers and presenting them with tokens of appreciation Wanasinghe expressed confidence that both the state and private institutions will continue to support the project as well. 

Speaking at the ceremony, the Port City Head of Public Relations Kassapa Senerath added that following the success of the beach cleaning project between Wellawatte and Mt. Lavinia, the Port City has decided to hand over the beach cleaning project of the stretch of beach in the Colombo Port City also to the Wana Arana Foundation. 

He further requested both the private and the state sector along with volunteers to come forward to support these initiatives.

The Lassana Werala project that was initiated two years ago has been commended and praised by the hotel operators, tourists, and residents of Wellawatte and Mt. Lavinia for the actual success of the initiative.
