Reinforcing its longstanding commitment to environmental sustainability, LB Finance PLC has launched a large-scale coastal conservation initiative along the Colpetty to Bambalapitiya shoreline in celebration of World Environment Day 2025.
Held under the theme of “Restoring Urban Coastal Ecosystems,” the event commenced on 5 June at 9 a.m. near the Colpetty Railway Station. This impactful program was conducted in collaboration with the Clean Sri Lanka Environment Protection Program, a Government-led initiative, and brought together a host of public and private stakeholders to promote ecological restoration and biodiversity.
Among the event’s highlights was the planting of over 6,000 native coastal vegetation saplings, including Scaevola Taccada and Scaevola Plumieri, renowned for their effectiveness in stabilising sand dunes and mitigating coastal erosion. These efforts aim to strengthen the city’s natural barrier systems and protect the marine drive from environmental degradation, especially amidst rising climate challenges.
The conservation drive featured active participation from LB Finance employees, members of the Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation, Department of Coastal Conservation and Coastal Resource Management, Forest Department, Department of Wildlife Conservation, and the Sri Lanka Army.
A special awareness session was held to educate participants and the public on the significance of preserving coastal biodiversity and the critical role native vegetation plays in safeguarding urban shorelines.
Speaking at the event, Senior Additional Secretary to the President – Finance and Economic Affairs G.M.R.D. Aponsu, emphasised the importance of collaborative approaches in sustainable development. Municipal Councillors Vraie Cally Balthazaar and Hemantha Weerakoon also graced the occasion, lending their support to the initiative.
LB Finance PLC Deputy Managing Director Niroshan Udage addressed the gathering and reaffirmed the company’s continued dedication to sustainability: “This initiative reflects our deep-rooted belief in protecting Sri Lanka’s natural heritage. Through long-term action — from urban reforestation to mangrove restoration — we aim to build resilient communities and a greener tomorrow.”
This project is a continuation of LB Finance’s robust Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) agenda. Previous milestones include community-led tree planting campaigns and ecosystem revitalisation efforts across the country. The shift toward urban coastal restoration marks a new chapter in the company’s environmental stewardship.
LB Finance PLC said it remains committed to shaping a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable future.
