LAUGFS Gas drives national dialogue on indoor emissions with ‘Dara Kadulu’ public awareness campaign on 2025 World LPG Day

In a bold move to address the health and environmental risks of traditional cooking practices, LAUGFS Gas PLC launched a high-impact public awareness campaign titled ‘Dara Kadulu’ as part of its World LPG Day 2025 initiatives. 

The campaign was strategically designed to raise awareness of the dangers of indoor air pollution caused by firewood use, and to promote LPG as a cleaner, safer alternative.

Executed in a high-footfall location in Colombo, the campaign featured a symbolic installation portraying a woman suffering from the effects of prolonged exposure to cooking smoke. The live enactment was supported by ambient effects, realistic props, and a visually immersive setting that replicated a smoke-filled kitchen environment. The initiative succeeded in drawing significant attention from the public, encouraging onlookers to engage with the message and reflect on the health consequences of firewood-based cooking.

LAUGFS Gas PLC Director/Cluster CEO Dr. Niroshan J. Pieries commented on the initiative, stating: “Indoor emissions from firewood stoves represent a silent but severe threat to health, particularly among women and children. Through ‘Dara Kadulu,’ we wanted to visualise that danger, raise awareness, and offer an immediate path to a healthier alternative. This campaign is a reflection of our longstanding commitment to cleaner energy adoption, public health, and sustainable living. We will continue to champion such efforts that blend community engagement with impact-driven outcomes.”

In support of actionable change, LAUGFS Gas offered participants the opportunity to receive a 25% discount on the purchase of a new LAUGFS Gas cylinder, encouraging conversion to LPG or donate loyalty points to ‘Project Life,’ LAUGFS Gas’s flagship CSR initiative that empowers underprivileged households through access to clean cooking energy.

LAUGFS Gas PLC Senior Marketing Manager Ravin Lankage stated: “We deliberately chose a street-based emotional execution to interrupt people’s daily routines and spark real-time reflection. By creating a visually compelling scene that people could witness first-hand, we not only captured attention—we created empathy. And to turn that emotional moment into meaningful action, we placed QR codes on-site to provide a 25% discount for new gas cylinders, along with the option to donate loyalty points to our CSR initiative, ‘Project Life.’ Awareness alone isn’t enough, people must be given a way to act, and that’s what we enabled.”

The campaign generated strong and positive feedback from the public. Many onlookers expressed deep appreciation for the campaign’s emotive delivery and educational value. By stimulating awareness and offering tangible benefits, ‘Dara Kadulu’ served as both a public engagement and behaviour change intervention.

The campaign aligned with the World LPG Association’s 2025 global theme, ‘LPG: Energy for All,’ advocating for inclusive energy access and the adoption of cleaner domestic fuel solutions in Sri Lanka.
