Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has appointed Shashikala Siriwardene as captain of the women’s national team, replacing Chamari Atapattu in One-Day and Twenty20 Internationals.

Siriwardene, who made her international debut in 2003, led the side 102 times in all formats between 2005 and 2014.

Atapattu took over as captain in April 2014 after Siriwadene resigned following a disappointing performance at the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 in Bangladesh, where Sri Lanka finished in eighth position.

Sri Lanka have won three out of nine ICC Women’s Championship matches and are lying in sixth place on the table, meaning outright qualification for the 2017 Women’s World Cup is unlikely.

However, SLC will be hopeful that having the vastly experienced Siriwardene back at the helm will help turn their fortunes around.

Atapattu has been named as Siriwardene’s vice-captain. Sri Lanka’s next scheduled engagement is the fourth round of the Women’s Championship when they travel to New Zealand between October and January.

Upul-Tharanga

Upul Tharanga will get the chance to prove his worth in Sri Lanka’s Test team against Pakistan after replacing Kumar Sangakkara.

Sri Lanka have called up Tharanga to replace Sangakkara for their winner-takes-all third Test against Pakistan.

Sangakkara announced on Saturday that he would walk away from international cricket after two matches of a home Test series against India, provisionally scheduled for August, but will sit out the Pakistan decider.  The 37-year-old is revered as one of the greatest run-scorers of the modern game, and has 12,305 Test runs at an average of 58.

In his place comes Tharanga, who made the last of his 19 Test appearances against Pakistan last August.

Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by seven wickets in Colombo last week, ensuring that the three-match series will go down to the wire in Pallekele.
