SCB principal sponsor of the Royal-Thomian Tennis Encounter for EFC Pereira Challenge Trophy 2013

SCB will be the proud sponsors of the Annual Royal-Thomian Tennis Encounter for the E.F.C. Pereira Challenge for the second year as part of their efforts in supporting and encouraging sports and recreation to school children. This year the trophy will be played on 2 November, 2013 at the SLTA Hard Courts from 8:30 a.m. The trophy, donated by Old Royalist and former President of the SLTA D.L. Seneviratne is named in memory of E.F.C. Pereira who was a teacher at Royal College for 20 years and thereafter a teacher at St. Thomas’ for a further 18 years. He was the teacher in charge of tennis at both Schools. This is the 9th encounter in the series and it is worthy to note that Royal College has the majority wins at the tournament except for last year when St. Thomas’ won the trophy for the very first time. This year in addition to the Winner of the Under-19 tie being awarded the trophy, there will also be an Under-15 and Under-13 age group tie. Each tie will consist of three singles and two doubles matches respectively. The Royal College Team is captained by Udistaran Raviraj and supported by key players Danushka Abeywardena and Eroo Samarasinghe. The St. Thomas’ team is led by Venuka Hulangamuwa, while the junior ranked players in their team include Avishka Perera and Jerique Rajapaksha. St. Thomas’ will go in as favourites this year with their recent win at the National School Games. Royal are expected to provide stiff opposition as they were the Public Schools Tennis Under-19 champions. The tournament therefore promises to be a keen tussle. The Royalists are coached by Sylvester Francis whilst Anjuna Anthony is the coach of the St. Thomas team. The chief guest would be former Davis Cup Manager Dijen De Seram who captained STC tennis in 1969 and also won cricket colours in 1968 and 1969. The referee for the event will be J.M. Dharaka Ellawela.
