By David Ebert With the April New Year season in high gear, the annual Governor’s Cup, the most prestigious horse racing event in the Sri Lanka Turf Club calendar, will kick off at 10:30 a.m. on 15 April at the Turf Club in Nuwara Eliya. With seven racing events lined up for the day - five races in the thoroughbred class 1 to 5, one race in the three-quarter bred and one more in the half-bred class, the day looks once again to be full of the excitement and high fashion expected at the races during the season, culminating in the main event of the day – the nine furlong Governor’s Cup. The day’s races will see 15 new thoroughbreds purchased from India by local owners vying for the honours as Sri Lanka Turf Club President Gamini Jayarathne revealed. In addition, he said that the event has attracted top jockeys from Bangalore, Mumbai and Hyderabad, who will engage our very own local talent this time around for the top spots. Jayarathne added that the day’s festivities will include a fashion show along with the traditional ‘Best Hat’, ‘Best Dressed Filly’, ‘Best Dressed Mare’ and ‘Best Dressed Stallion’ competitions which will see the winners walk away with CMB-Chennai return air tickets, Mobitel dongles, special gifts from Lanlo and a ‘dinner for two’ package from The Kingsbury, Colombo.
