The much-awaited Donald Steel golf tournament for 2017 will tee off on 18 February at the beautiful Victoria Golf and Country course in Digana with over 100 top golfers to participate in this annual event. This event will be sponsored by Orange Electricals.
Former Sri Lanka opening batsman, Sidath Wettimuny will defend his title.
Voted as one of the 100 most beautiful course in the world and number one in the Asian Subcontinent, the par 73, 6933-yard championship course was designed in 1997 by the internationally acclaimed golf course architect Donald Steel to U.S.P.G.A. standards.
Donald Steel Trophy is the flagship tournament and a Board Event at Victoria Golf & Country Resort. The tournament itself marks the opening of the Golf Course and is linked to history and its traditions. The tournament is well established and has been supported throughout the years by both locals and overseas golfers. The tournament provides the opportunity of associating a world-class brand with a prestigious world class sport. A winning combination undoubtedly.
Donald Steel is a former golfer and is a noted golf course designer, as well as being a writer and journalist. On the Churchillian assumption that a man is fortunate if his work and pleasure are one, Donald Steel has had 45 years doing what he has loved best. He has served as President of the Association of Golf Writers (1993-98) and the British Association of Golf Course Architects (1986-89). In 2003, Steel was named as the 4th most influential golf course architect in the world by Golf Magazine. More recently, in February 2006, Steel received the singular honor of being elected President of the English Golf Union.
The tournament will feature one day of competitive golf in Stableford format. The Championship will be over 18 holes. The players will be given an experience of playing in a professional tournament through the use of top quality collateral and administration.
