Digampitiya MV create history at Samaposha Under-15 Inter-School Football Championship

The Samaposha Under-15 Inter-School Football Championship recently concluded at the Sir Albert F. Peiris Stadium in Wennapuwa. 

The event is sponsored for the 8th consecutive year by Samaposha, the leading nutrition brand of Plenty Foods Ltd., and is being organised in collaboration with the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) and the Sri Lanka School Football Association (SSFA). This year’s championship ended with history being made.

The tournament kicked off on 14 September with the participation of 510 schools islandwide totalling over 10,000 students. St. Joseph’s College, Maradana emerged champions in the Boys’ tournament by vanquishing its rival Al Aqsha College, Kinniya 2-0. Accordingly, Al Aqsha walked away with the trophy for the first runner-up while St. Sebastian’s College, Katuneriya emerged second runner-up. 

Shenal Sandeepa from St. Joseph’s College grabbed the trophy for the Best Player of the Tournament while Mathish Perera of the same school won the title for the Best Goalkeeper.

To the amazement of all onlookers, Digampitiya Maha Vidyalaya, Kurunegala emerged champions in the Girls’ category. They beat the previous year’s champions, Mahajana College, Jaffna by 1-0. The Samaposha Under-15 Inter- School Football Championship 2016 was the first football tournament that Digampitiya Maha Vidyala participated in. The Best Player of the tournament was Nayani Thamasha Jayabandu and the Best Goalkeeper was Peshani Dilhara Jayasinghe, both of whom were from Digampitiya MV.

Sharing his thoughts on the tournament, SSFA Secretary General N.S.B. Dissanayake, said: “I’m proud to witness a great deal of camaraderie throughout this tournament. We were awed by the talent and the enthusiasm of these players. My heartfelt gratitude goes to Samaposha for stepping in as the sole sponsor of this tournament over the past eight years. With the backing of a conglomerate like CBL we have the opportunity to identify the talented Sri Lankan players and lead them up the ladder.”
