ARASL welcomes FISA Olympic coach to train Sri Lankan rowing coaches

The Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka (ARASL) has organised several local programs for the purpose of developing the sport of rowing in Sri Lanka. In keeping with its objectives, the ARASL in collaboration with the International Rowing Federation FISA (Fédération Internationale des Sociétés d’Aviron) and with assistance from the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka and the International Olympic Solidarity Program has organized a comprehensive rowing clinic, for the advancement of national rowing coaches. The workshop comprises of three stages. The first stage will be held from 15 to 20 August 2013. The second and third stages will follow in November 2013 and February 2014 respectively. Internationally renowned rowing coach Antonio Maurogiovanni who is based in Perth, is conducting the program. Maurogiovanni has been recommended for this program by the International Rowing Federation (FISA) The main objectives of this program are; to develop new rowing coaches mainly from the active rowing clubs affiliated to the ARASL. In this regard, several clubs representing the defence services benefit immensely in learning modern training techniques. The ARASL has identified the vast number of rowers from the defence services as ideal candidates to be drafted for national training. To introduce latest techniques in training to improve the performance of the current national pool athletes. To formulate a pool of qualified coaches to draw in talented athletes for result oriented, dedicated training. To introduce the sport to at least three other regions within the next two years. The regions identified are Hambantota and Tissamaharama in the Southern Province, Kandy in the Central Province and Vakarai in the Eastern Province. To refresh and improve the knowledge base of the current coaches who are involved with the institutions. At present, over 500 men and women in a 70:30 ratio actively engaged in the sport from seventeen different institutions. These institutions comprise of clubs, schools, universities and the defence services. There are three rowing centres in Sri Lanka, i.e. The Colombo Rowing Club, Bolgoda Lake Rowing Club and the newly developed Diyawanna Rowing Centre which facilitate the athletes. The Diyawanna Rowing Centre recently hosted the 28th National Rowing Championship in April 2013. Since its inception in 1864, the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka is based at the Colombo Rowing Club. However, elaborate plans are currently underway to establish the national headquarters and the Sri Lanka Rowing Academy at the Diyawanna Rowing Centre by the end of this year.
