Zahira College continued their remarkable resurgence in the Dialog Schools Under-19 Rugby League with a sensational 38/34 victory over St. Peter’s College at Bambalapitiya last weekend.
This ended a 28-year wait for a win against the Peterites while keeping their League title hopes firmly alive.
The Maradana outfit, who earlier this season stunned Royal College for the first time in 63 years, once again proved they are the competition’s giant killers. Their latest triumph over an unbeaten St. Peter’s side underlined the tremendous progress made by the Zahirians, who remain serious contenders in the Cup segment.
Trailing 17/20 at halftime, Zahira produced a spirited second-half comeback, adding 21 points through disciplined and aggressive rugby. Their ability to capitalise on scoring opportunities and maintain composure under pressure ultimately made the difference in a thrilling contest.
Flanker Shaifullah Zulfikar emerged as the match-winning hero, contributing 18 points through a try, five conversions, and a penalty. His accurate kicking and leadership were instrumental in guiding Zahira to one of their most memorable victories in recent history.
The visitors crossed the line five times through Imadh Inam, Ahmed Riyaz, Lisath Pathirana, Zulfikar, and a penalty try. St. Peter’s matched them with five tries of their own, but Zahira’s superior goal-kicking proved decisive in the four-point win.
With victories over two traditional powerhouses in Royal and St. Peter’s, Zahira have sent a strong message to the rest of the field. The lads from Maradana are playing with confidence, belief, and purpose, and remain very much in contention for top honours as the League enters its decisive stages.
