Women’s NSL T20 gets underway today

Sri Lanka Cricket will revive the Women’s NSL T20 2026 tournament commencing today, thereby marking another big step towards the growth of women’s cricket in the country.

The tournament was played in the past in staggered form with Covid also being part of the problem.

Four teams, three of them captained by Sri Lanka cricketers – Hasini Perera (Team Green), Vishmi Gunaratne (Team Grey) and Harshitha Samarawickrama (Team Blue) and the fourth by uncapped 16-year-old left-arm spinner Chamodi Praboda (Team Red) will compete with each other twice in a round robin basis at the end of which the top two teams will qualify to play in the final.

Each team comprises 15 players which includes several national cricketers plus young talent who have surfaced from the schools at Under19 level.

The selectors have rested some of the senior players like Chamari Athapaththu, Inoka Ranaweera, Inoshi Priyadarshani, Udeshika Prabodhani to give younger players the opportunity and exposure to T20 cricket.

The tournament gets underway at the BRC grounds today with Blues meeting Greys in the morning and Greens playing Reds in the afternoon.
