Zahira College continued their impressive run in the Schools Under-19 Rugby League with a thrilling 31/25 win over Science College at Mount Lavinia yesterday, holding their nerve in a closely contested encounter. Despite trailing 14/19 at halftime, Zahira produced a strong second-half comeback to maintain their unbeaten streak.
Isipathana College also extended their winning run with a convincing 33/10 victory over DS Senanayake College at the Royal Sports Complex. The match, originally scheduled for Havelock Park, was shifted due to poor ground conditions. The Greens held a narrow 14/10 lead at the short breather before dominating proceedings in the second half.
Ananda College registered a solid 31/5 win against Prince of Wales College at the Air Force Grounds in Ratmalana. Ananda led 12/5 at halftime and went on to control the game with a disciplined all-round performance.
At the Sugathadasa Stadium, Royal College bounced back strongly in the second half to defeat Thurstan College 40/15. Thurstan had stunned Royal by taking a 15/14 lead into halftime, but Royal’s superior fitness and structure saw them pull away comfortably after the break.
Meanwhile, Sri Sumangala College produced a spirited display to overcome Lumbini College 33/10 at Police Park. Leading 14/3 at halftime, the Kandy outfit maintained their momentum to seal a well-deserved victory.
After Week 2, Zahira, Sumangala, Isipathana, and Royal continue their winning streak, while defending champions Trinity look solid with two half-a-century plus scores against Lumbini and the Antonians while awaiting Sumangala in their next encounter.
