Vishmi steals limelight with tournament-best 166 for CCC

Navy SC, Air Force SC, and Chilaw Marians CC continued their domination of the SLC Major Clubs Women’s Limited-Over Tournament, recording their fifth straight win in as many games, but the most noteworthy display of the day came from national top order bat Vishmi Gunaratne, who hit a magnificent 166 off 152 balls (23 fours, 2 sixes) for CCC, beating the previous highest individual score in the tournament – 140 by her Sri Lankan teammate Harshitha Samarawickrama for Navy SC against Badureliya SC.

CCC scored 217 and Vishmi contributed 76.5% of the runs scored by her team in their 44-run win against Colts at the Colts Grounds. The second highest score was 18. Colts managed 173, with Nethmi Upeksha making a top score of 41 and seamer Malshi Nirasha capturing 3/23.

In a low-scoring match at Surrey Village Grounds, Maggona, Chilaw Marians CC bowled out Ace Capital CC for a paltry 42 off 23.3 overs and knocked the runs off in 11.1 overs to win by seven wickets. 17-year-old left-arm wrist spinner Shashini Gimhani picked up three of the top four wickets for 19 runs for Chilaw Marians CC.

SSC, who ran up the highest total of the ongoing tournament in their last game, were brought down to earth by Navy SC, who dismissed them for 120 off 40.2 overs, the main damage to their batting being done by national cricketer Udeshika Prabodhani, who opened the bowling and finished with figures of 3/24 with her left-arm seam. Navy SC’s innings of 245-6 was composed of a half-century from opener Hasini Perera (56 off 66 balls, 8 fours), a lengthy knock of 41 off 75 balls (5 fours) from Harshitha Samarawickrama, and a rapid 46 off 34 balls (7 fours) from Sathya Sandeepani.

Air Force SC had to thank all-rounder Malsha Shehani for seeing them over the line in a tight game, which they won by three wickets against Panadura SC at Katunayake. The target for Air Force SC was only 130, but Panadura SC reduced them to 106-7, and only an unbroken 23-run stand for the eighth wicket between Malsha (47* off 50 balls, 5 fours) and Malki Madara (3* off 22 balls) saw Air Force SC home in the 32nd over. Skipper Piumi Wathsala top-scored for Panadura SC with 51 off 69 balls (6 fours). Off-spinner Sandani Thiwanka picked up three wickets for 17 for Air Force SC.

The third services team in the tournament Army SC recorded their third win, beating Badureliya CC by eight wickets at Army grounds, Dombagoda. Seamer Randi Premarathne (4/29) and left-arm spinner Sugandika Kumari (3/19) dismissed Badureliya CC for 108 off 49.5 overs. Army SC knocked the required runs off in 26 overs, with openers Niluka Kushanthi (47 off 75 balls, 4 fours) and Imalka Mendis (45 off 71 balls, 3 fours) erasing 97 of them in 24. – [ST]
