The funeral of veteran sports administrator Prema Pinnawala who died at the age of 88 took place at the General Cemetery, Borella on Thursday.
Pinnawala served as General Secretary of the National Olympic Council of Sri Lanka (NOCSL) for 14 consecutive years from 1983 to 1997 playing a pioneering role in securing hosting rights for major international sporting events in Sri Lanka which included the 1991 and 2006 South Asian Games, the 2002 Asian Senior Athletics Championships and the 2012 Asian Junior Athletics Championships.
He also held long-standing positions as Vice President and General Secretary of Sri Lanka Athletics retiring in 2023 after decades of dedicated service.
In recognition of his outstanding service to athletics he was awarded the Senior Veteran Pin of Honour by World Athletics, the world’s governing body.
As General Manager of the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation he contributed considerably to the Nationalised Services Sports Association. He is survived by his wife Jayani and two daughters.
