Alishan Sharafu and Muhammad Waseem gave UAE a rapid start, posting 88 in 11 overs | Junaid Siddique struck in his first two overs to finish with 4/23 |
ABU DHABI: United Arab Emirates (UAE) outplayed Oman in all departments to register a 42-run win and post their first points in their Group A match of the Asia Cup, played at the Zayed Cricket Stadium, Abu Dhabi, yesterday.
After UAE had posted an above-average total of 172-5 on the board, Oman was never in the hunt in the run chase. They lost four inside the powerplay. There was a brief partnership for the sixth wicket, but that didn’t last long enough to threaten UAE, who were always in control. Junaid Siddique finished with a four-fer, while Muhammad Jawadullah and Haider Ali picked up a couple of wickets each to wrap things up.
It was the fifties from both openers that set UAE up nicely when they were put in to bat earlier in the day. Sharafu (51 off 38 balls, 7 fours, 1 six) and Waseem shared an 88-run stand in 11 overs, helping their team post 172-5 on the board, which proved to be more than enough.
The opening pair took some time to get going, but once they found their bearings, the runs started to flow. Both batsmen got to their respective fifties, with Waseem, who got a few reprieves, almost carrying his bat, scoring 69 off 54 balls (6 fours, 3 sixes) but being dismissed in the final over. However, handy cameos from Zohaib (21 off 13 balls) and Kaushik (19* off 8) took them past the 170-mark. – [ST]Scores:
