Trinity College produced a powerful second-half effort to overcome a spirited Zahira College outfit 32-23 at the Dialog Schools Under-19 Knockout Rugby Tournament, which concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium last evening.
It was a gripping contest that unfolded as a tale of two halves, with Zahira dominating the opening period through disciplined structure and enterprising running rugby. At the short breather, Zahira deservedly led 11-10, having controlled territory well and minimised errors while putting Trinity under sustained pressure.
Zahira drew first blood as Afham Abdeen crossed over early, setting the tone for an energetic start, but Trinity responded through a forward-driven try by Achintha Jayasena to remain within reach.
The lads from Maradana continued to impress, with skipper Hakeem Chunchi and Basith Feroze adding crucial penalties, while Trinity stayed in contention thanks to a timely effort from Nisith Kumarasinghe.
However, the Kandy outfit emerged a transformed side after the turnaround, raising their intensity and execution to pile on 22 points through tries by Shan Althaf, Abdul Malik, and Vihanga Indusara, turning the game on its head.
To their credit, Zahira never relented, fighting until the final whistle with tries from Feroze and Zain Hassan, but Trinity’s superior second-half dominance ultimately sealed the win and a semi-final showdown against Wesley College.
Meanwhile, Royal beat S. Thomas’ College 25/5 at Havelock Park last evening.
Royal led 7/5 at the short breather.
Royal will meet Isipathana in the other semi-final.
In another thrilling encounter, Isipathana outclassed St. Joseph’s College 22/10 at Royal Sports Complex last evening.
At the short breather, Greens led 7/3.
Both semi-finals will take place next weekend in Colombo.
