Trinity fullback Abdul Malik held by a Thomian player
By Shamseer Jaleel
Trinity College continued their flawless campaign in the Dialog Schools Under-19 Rugby League 2025 with a dominant 36/19 win over S. Thomas’ College at Mount Lavinia, ending the Thomians’ unbeaten streak in style.
The Lions were ruthless from the onset, racing to a 29/12 lead by halftime. Their aggressive approach in both attack and defence rattled the home side, leaving the Thomians stunned during the first 35 minutes of play. With this win, Trinity retained the Canon R.S. de Saram Trophy intact for yet another term.
Trinity’s three-quarters line combined beautifully with their forward pack to create gaping holes and exploit them efficiently. Their quick offloads and well-coordinated set pieces kept the Thomians on the back foot throughout the opening half. Lions ghosting moves were a constant occurring near the beach side ground.
Although the second half saw a more composed Thomian defence, Trinity’s control and patience ensured they maintained a comfortable buffer. The Thomians managed to restrict Trinity to just one try in the second half, but failed to capitalise on their own chances. S. Thomas’ will rue their poor ball handling. They squandered at least five attacking opportunities, missing out on at least two scoring opportunities as well.
For Trinity, standout performances came from Evin Jayasena, who is on his debut season with the Under-19 outfit, and Captain Shafraz Usmaan, who led from the front. Abdul Malik and Hamza Abdeen also impressed with their tireless work rate, while Udan Wijekoon and Nisith Kumarasinghe controlled play expertly.
The Thomians had bright moments through skipper Venuka Wickramasuriya, Zaydaan Akbar, and Mayanka Dias, but they lacked consistency when it mattered most.
With this win, Trinity remain as the only unbeaten team in the League this season so far and will be awaiting much tougher opposition at home when they lock horns with Isipathana, Wesley, and St. Peter’s—all in their backyard in Pallekele.
