Trinity in 11-try blitz against Vidyartha

Trinity College delivered a commanding performance in Week 2 of the Dialog Schools Rugby League 2025, dismantling Vidyartha College 74/14 in a dominant display at their Pallekele Rugby Stadium.

The Lions ran in 11 tries in a relentless attacking performance, showing both flair and structure despite wet playing conditions. Vidyartha could reply with only two converted tries.

Led by inspirational skipper Shafraz Usmaan, Trinity clicked from the opening whistle. Their backs and forwards worked in seamless cohesion, running effective lines and maintaining slick handling under pressure. The likes of Nisith Kumarasinghe, Ryan Weerakoon, Abdul Malik, and Sadeesha Weerawansa were instrumental in the try-fest, combining pace, power, and vision to leave Vidyartha struggling for answers. Trinity’s intensity at the breakdown and set piece superiority laid the foundation for their expansive game plan.

Vidyartha, to their credit, tried to remain competitive, but it was not their day. Nothing seemed to go their way, and they were outplayed in all departments. This heavy defeat marked one of their worst against Trinity in recent memory, comparable only to their 62/7 loss in 2012 under Jason Dissanayake’s captaincy.

Trinity now look ahead to two crucial fixtures in Colombo against Thurstan at Sugathadasa Stadium and St. Joseph’s College at CR & FC before returning to Pallekele for a potential blockbuster against arch-rivals Royal College. Vidyartha will need to get back to their top form sooner than later as they face Sumangala in their next game; plus a win for them against Thurstan is vital to move forward to the Plate segment in round two.

Elsewhere, the week saw several tightly contested matches and notable performances across the island.

At Rajagiriya, Ananda College edged past Science College 32/26 in a nail-biting encounter that went down to the wire. Ananda led 17/12 at half-time and managed to hold on in a top-class finish, enabling the Maradana outfit to register their first top division rugby win after their promotion.

Mahanama College too made headlines with a historic 15/5 win over Dharmaraja College at the Air Force Grounds in Ratmalana. This victory marks a return to relevance in the ‘A’ Division after decades of striving, and their grit and discipline were evident throughout. This was the Mahanama outfit’s first win in top division rugby.

Royal College were in ruthless form as they crushed Sri Sumangala College, Kandy, 53/3 in Bogambara, maintaining their unbeaten run with clinical finishing and rock-solid defence. The game was played in Kandy and the ground condition being below standard, as there was heavy rain in the Central Hills, did not allow free flow for the three-quarters.

St. Joseph’s College secured a 26/5 victory over Thurstan College at Longdon Place. While the Joes were deserved winners, Thurstan showed improved performances.

In Nittawela, St. Peter’s College retained the Rector’s Trophy with a strong second-half comeback to beat St. Anthony’s College 24/8, underlining their credentials as serious contenders this season as the defending champions.

Meanwhile at Mount Lavinia, Thomians continued their unbeaten run when they went past the gutsy Zahira outfit 43/19. (SJ)
