Trinity College finished the first day of their Mahela-Sanga Challenge Trophy Under-19 cricket encounter against Nalanda College in a strong position at the Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy yesterday.

Nalanda, after winning the toss and electing to bat first, were shot out for a paltry 82. None of their batsmen went on to make a big score or displayed confidence during their stay at the wicket. The wicket helped the seamers in the morning hours, during which time Trinity Skipper and national youth player Ruvin Peiris took five wickets. He was well supported by Abisheik Anandakumara, who chipped in with three wickets.

Trinity batted at a brisk rate, scoring nearly four runs an over and finishing on 214. They were helped by two fine innings from Anandakumara (70) and Deemantha Bandra (49). Their last three batsmen showed a lot of guts in taking them past the 200-run mark.

Nalanda, batting for the second time, were in deep trouble at 17 for 1 at stumps of day 1.

Nalanda 82 in 27.5 overs

Mahima Weerakoon 25, Raveen de Silva 24

Ruvin Peiris 5 for 32, Abishek Anandakumar 3 for 25 and 17 for 1 in 4.2 overs
