Trinity winger Dimath Ambepitiya on a powerful move
|
Defending league champions Trinity College yesterday produced a commanding display to end the unbeaten run of Isipathana College with an emphatic 36/12 victory in their Schools Under-19 Rugby League clash played before a packed crowd at Havelock Park.
At halftime, the Trinity Lions held a deserved 17/7 lead after dominating possession and territory for most of the opening spell. Although the game began at a fast pace, Trinity gradually took complete control after the first 15 minutes, with their forwards and backs combining brilliantly.
The visitors crossed the Isipathana try line on six occasions, displaying excellent attacking structure and finishing ability. Their defence too remained solid, restricting the home side to only two tries despite several attacking phases by the Greens.
Trinity’s lively scrum-half Udan Wijekoon was outstanding throughout the game with his quick service and clever tactical play. Skipper Shan Althaf led from the front, while Achintha Jayasena also delivered a powerful performance for the winners.
For Isipathana, skipper Shaakib Zumri and Nimantha Sandeepa battled hard and remained influential despite the defeat.
Trinity scored their tries through Althaf (2), Rithika Weragama, Ambepitiya, and Minula Yaddehige. One of the Trinity tries was a penalty try. Althaf managed two of the try conversions. For Isipathana, their two tries and conversion were done by Sandeepa.
Referee Raveen Alexander controlled the game efficiently.
Trinity will carry forward their points in this game into the Super Round.
