Tier B 50-over tournament Army SC, Galle CC, Chilaw Marians CC, Navy SC maintain unbeaten record

Dulsith Darshana featured in Galle CC’s win with an unbeaten century, Shehada Zoysa (5/19) bowled Army SC to victory

Army SC, Galle CC, Chilaw Marians CC and Navy SC maintained their unbeaten record in the Tier B 50-over tournament with facile wins in their respective matches played on Thursday.

Army SC registered the most convincing of wins crushing Kandy Customs SC by a massive 194 runs under the DLS method at Panagoda. Half-centuries from Ashan Sudarshana (53 off 68 balls, 6 fours, 1 six), Pathum Dilshan (67 off 92 balls, 6 fours, 1 six) and Asela Gunaratne (53 off 37 balls, 8 fours) saw Army SC rattle off 280-8 and then rout Kandy Customs SC for 67 with spinners Shehada Zoysa (5/19) and Lilan Rangana (3/18) sharing the spoils.

Galle CC thumped Sebastianites by eight wickets at Surrey grounds, Maggona with a strong batting display. Galle CC overhauled Sebastianites’ total of 204 replying with 208-2 the major part of their run chase being handled by former Mahinda College, Galle cricketer Dulsith Darshana who hit an unbeaten 104 off 153 balls (12 fours, 2 sixes) and shared an opening stand of 114 with Yuthika de Silva (58 off 55 balls, 6 fours, 1 six). Only Teron Baskaran (75 off 71 balls, 8 fours, 1 six) stood tall for Sebastianites against the pace cum spin attack of Kavindu Nirmana (4/33) and Chanaka Devinda (3/42).

Chilaw Marians CC coasted to a four-wicket win against United Southern SC at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, Hambantota. A century opening stand of 110 by Arosha Sithumina (46) and Eshan Withanage (55 off 83 balls, 4 fours) saw Chilaw Marians CC reach their target of 211 with seven balls to spare. Former Matara Thomians captain Pesandu Sanjan took 4/35 with spin. For United Southern SC, Kavindu Ediriweera top scored with 72 off 101 balls (3 fours).

Navy SC pulled off a comfortable 28-run win against Kurunegala SC at Welisara. Although the winning margin looked small, Navy SC were in total control of the chase, reducing Kurunegala SC to 162-7. Only a 70-run stand off 72 balls between Sanuja Ninduwara (51 of 47 balls, 2 fours, 3 sixes) and skipper Sarinda Dassanayake (27) delayed the inevitable. Two half-century stands featured Navy SC’s innings of 269 – 80 between Pulasthi Athapaththu (17) and Thimira Malshan (63 off 72 balls, 3 fours, 3 sixes) and 68 between Avindu Theekshana (48) and Ishan Abeysekara (35). The spin and pace of Ruchira Silva (4/45) and Sanuja Ninduwara (3/77) accounted for the wickets.

Moratuwa SC and Negombo CC recorded their first wins. Moratuwa SC beat Ragama CC by 134 runs (DLS method) at SLLDC grounds Kirimandala. Chamara Fernando (59 off 52 balls, 1 fours, 5 sixes) top scored in Moratuwa SC’s total of 268-9. Ragama CC chasing a revised target of 245 was put out for 110 by seamer Mayura Malshan (3/25) and spinners Madusanka Premarathna (3/19) and Rusith Jayawardana (2/12).

Negombo CC defended their moderate total of 205 by dismissing Leo CC for 119 and win by 86 runs at Air Force grounds, Katunayake. Thathsara Eshan top scored for Negombo CC with 71 off 77 balls (5 fours) and left-arm spinner Sudara Dakshina claimed 5/44.
