After nearly two decades of commitment to the oval-shaped ball game, Sri Lanka national XVs skipper Tarinda Ratwatte has officially announced his retirement, bringing an influential chapter of local and international rugby to a close.

The announcement was made during a luncheon hosted in his honour by Kandy SC President Mahesh Weerasinghe.

Ratwatte’s journey began in 2006 when he first represented Trinity College at the Under-12 level. His steady rise through the age groups culminated in captaining the school in 2014, earning the coveted Rugby Lion for his outstanding leadership and talent. Over the next decade, he became a central figure in Sri Lankan club rugby, representing CR & FC and later Kandy Sports Club, two of the country’s most storied institutions.

His career was defined by consistency, technical excellence, and an unwavering passion that set him apart as one of the nation’s finest playmakers.

Speaking to the Daily FT, he credited mentors such as former Trinity player Niranjan Ranasinghe, who enabled his rugby exposure in New Zealand, and school Coach Neil Foote, who recognised his potential early. He extended heartfelt thanks to his parents, sister, teammates, and management at both CR and Kandy SC for their support throughout his journey.

Though stepping away from competitive rugby, Ratwatte hopes to continue contributing to the sport through mentoring, coaching, or commentary, ensuring his knowledge, experience, and deep love for the game continue to inspire future generations.
