Tamil Union and Ace Capital CC topped their respective groups with resounding wins over CCC and Colts in the Major Club T20 matches played yesterday.
In a rain affected match played at the R Premadasa Stadium, Tamil Union beat CCC by 24 runs (DLS method). Batting first, the defending champions scored 139-7 off 18 overs with Dulnith Sigera contributing an aggressive 61 off 45 balls (4 fours, 3 sixes) and seamer Lahiru Samarakoon taking 3/26. Tamil Union left with a revised target of 85 to chase from 11.5 overs, finished on 108-2, the main contribution coming from Navod Paranavithana (63 off 35 balls, 9 fours, 2 sixes).
Ace Capital CC had an easy win by seven wickets at Police Park after rolling over Colts for 56. The seam and spin of Rachintha de Silva (3/12) and Traveen Mathew (3/9) and Wanuja Sahan (2/11) undid the Colts batting. Ace Capital CC knocked the runs off inside 10 overs.
Last year’s runner-up Panadura SC made a winning start to their campaign beating Bloomfield by four wickets (DLS method) at Surrey grounds, Maggona. Bloomfield rattled off an impressive 180-8 with skipper Ravindu Fernando leading the way making a top score of 58 off 31 balls (5 fours, 3 sixes). Rain interruptions altered Panadura SC’s target to 108 off 10 overs. Shalith Fernando’s brisk innings of 49* off 24 balls (2 fours, 4 sixes) saw them home with three balls to spare.
NCC also started on a winning note racing to the highest total of the day – 232-2 courtesy a brilliant unbeaten century (103 off 54 balls, 7 fours, 8 sixes) from Kavin Bandara and his unbroken stand of 152 off 65 balls with Sahan Arachchige (61* off 27 balls, 3 fours, 5 sixes) that enabled them to Badureliya CC by 94 runs at the R Premadasa Stadium. Badureliya CC managed only 138-7 with seamer Kavindu Premaratne picking up 3/23.
Moors SC coasted to an easy eight-wicket win over Kurunegala YCC at Surrey grounds, Maggona. Amesh Thennakoon top scored with 44* in Kurunegala YCC’s total of 143-9. Moors SC topped that total to win with 15 balls to spare. Skipper Sohan de Livera thumped 49 off 39 balls (7 fours, 1 six) in Moors SC’s run chase. – [ST]
