Major Club 3-Day League Tournament
By Sa’adi Thawfeeq
One could say that it is still early days for the Major Club 3-Day Super Eights winner to be decided. But with only three more weekends of cricket to go, all eight clubs are in with a chance of winning the title despite the first innings losses some of the clubs suffered in the first weekend.
Moors SC, who started the Super Eights as the top team with the most number of points, have given way to Ace Capital CC, who got the better of defending champions Bloomfield last weekend to go to the top of the standings with 37.620 points.
Ace Capital CC take on Colts at the CCC Grounds in one of the four matches commencing today. Colts took first innings points from Moors SC to move to fourth position with 32.165 points, and this contest with Ace Capital CC should turn out to be a key battle for the top spot as only five points separate the two teams.
Moors SC lost the opportunity to capitalise on the points they brought forward from the group stage when they lost to Colts, but they remain in second position with 35.525 points.
Moors SC meet defending champions Bloomfield at Colts Grounds. Bloomfield sit second from the bottom of the standings with 27.505 points after going down to Ace Capital CC last weekend. They will need to pull off a win here if they are to get anywhere close to retaining the title.
Beaten finalists of last year NCC are determined to make sure they can clinch the title this time. Their first innings win over CCC has pushed them up to third in the table with 33.225 points. NCC will not have it easy against a Police SC side inspired by Captain Ashen Bandara, who is in fine touch having scored a double century and a century and 158 last week in his last five matches. It was Bandara’s contribution that saw Police SC defeat BRC. Police SC lie fifth with 31.345 points and trail NCC by only a small margin.
The outcome of this game, which takes place at the Galle Cricket Stadium, will determine which team has the best chance of winning the title.
Following their defeat to Police SC, BRC find themselves at the bottom of the table with 23.340 points and will need to pull up their socks to be in contention when they take on CCC at the Pallekele Cricket Stadium. CCC, on the other hand, having lost by a bare margin of 12 runs to NCC, will need a strong display to lift themselves from sixth position and increase their points tally from 29.455.
An interesting weekend of cricket lies ahead over the next three days where the results will determine which way the title is heading.
