Former Wesley College all-rounder Movin Subasingha plundered 72 off 27 balls which included 29 runs off one over from Ashen Bandara that took him to his 50 off 22 balls to give BRC a winning start at the Colts grounds where they beat Police SC by 66 runs yesterday.

BRC were somewhat in the doldrums after losing their first seven wickets for 118 by the 16th over. It was then that Subasingha who has a strike rate of 152 in T20 matches took control of the innings smashing the ball to all parts of the ground collecting 7 sixes and 4 fours to enable BRC post a competitive total of 160.

When it came for Police SC’s turn to bat their batsmen fumbled against the left-arm spin of Shashika Dulshan (4/20) and succumbed for 94 with Bandara being their top scorer with 37.

Last year’s finalists NCC (champions) and Bloomfield (runner-up) also got their campaign off on a winning trail.

Fifties from Pathum Nissanka (50 off 21 balls, 3 fours, 4 sixes) and Lahiru Udara (56 off 25 balls, 8 fours, 2 sixes) who figured in a second wicket stand of 104 off 43 balls saw NCC cruise past Kurunegala YCC’s total of 135-9 to win by 6 wickets with 7 overs to spare at the CCC grounds.

Bloomfield coasted to an easy 7 wickets win with 77 balls to spare after bowling out Nugegoda SWC for 57 in 14.1 overs at the Colts grounds. Left-arm seamer Dulaj Samuditha creamed the Nugegoda SWC top order taking 4/13, and off-spinner Ravindu Fernando (4/5) did the mopping up operations.

CCC also started on a winning note beating Ace Capital CC by 6 wickets at the P Sara Oval. Invited to bat first Ace Capital CC could muster only 98-8. Himasha Liyanage made a top score of 31. CCC got the required runs in 16 overs with National Test Captain Dhananjaya de Silva contributing a fluent 42 off 32 balls (3 fours, 1 six) to go with his two wickets.

Moors SC cruised through to a comfortable 7-wicket win against Panadura SC at the P Sara Oval. Panadura SC’s total of 130-8 which featured 4 run outs was passed by Moors SC in the 13th over. Sohan de Livera (46 off 28 balls, 5 fours, 1 six) and Pasindu Sooriyabandara (37* off 20 balls, 1 fours, 3 sixes) were their principal scorers.

In a high scoring game played at the CCC grounds, where the highest match aggregate for the day took place – 331, Colts got the better of Tamil Union to win by four wickets with 7 balls to spare. Former Sri Lanka Under-19 Captain Sineth Jayawardena’s knock of 61 off 35 balls (4 fours, 4 sixes) featured Tamil Union’s innings of 165-8 where fast bowler Kavishka Anjula captured half the wickets to fall for 19 runs. Colts struggled initially losing 4 for 75 but Sanoj Darshika played a level-headed innings (55* off 44 balls, 7 fours, 1 six) to see his team home despite the threat posed by ambidextrous spinner Tharindu Rathnayake (3/28).
